Yet, scientists are quick to point out that this is what’s known in the medical community as a placebo effect. In other words, you’re so sure that you’re healing yourself with these measures that you suddenly become less in tune with what was originally aching you. Let’s take a look at a real-life example.

Three Groups, One Placebo, One Result

In a recent study, doctors split 123 men who suffered from ED into three groups. Group 1 believed they were receiving a kind of substance to treat their ED. The second group knew they may be receiving a real drug or placebo. Group 3 understood without question that they were taking a placebo.

In reality, everyone received a placebo: a capsule of starch. 

Twelve weeks later, the doctors followed up. Interestingly, each group reported improvements in their ED severity. Group 1 improved by 31.7%, Group 2 by 36.8% and Group 3 by 36.8%. Sufferers achieved real, clinical effects, improved erectile function and higher quality erections. 

Were those results attributed to the “medicine” they were taking? Nope. Rather, it’s more likely that the reduced stress levels they experienced as a result of believing they were going to get better, played a role in their temporary progress. 

Analyzing the Natural ED Remedy Market

Understanding the placebo effect and the sufferer’s inclination to believe that anything is working when he wants a cure badly enough, let’s delve deeper into a few other natural cures associated with erectile dysfunction.

Below are seven popular herbal remedies that men are currently taking to treat their ED and keep it under control. While they might sound like calmer, gentler approaches as opposed to prescription medicine, they often come with their own set of medical concerns, shortcomings and downright dangers. Let’s take a look.

1. Acupuncture

Turning yourself into a human pin cushion? Sure, anything in the name of better sex, right?

Turns out, this ancient Chinese art, which can have myriad beneficial health effects, might not be as powerful in treating your ED as you’d like to believe. 

When you go for a session, your acupuncturist will insert tiny needles at strategic points in your body in an effort to balance your energy and bring healing. It’s also said to improve and boost your blood flow. For this reason, it’s often the first course of action for those who suffer from headaches and muscle pain. 

As erectile dysfunction is brought on by restricted or inadequate blood flow to the penis, it sounds like acupuncture would be an ideal natural fix. Yet, the truth is there have not been enough viable clinical studies to back up this claim.

Recently, scientists from Korea and the United Kingdom reviewed 80 global acupuncture studies. They found that only four were deemed acceptable. Of those, only two had more than 45 men in the trial and all utilized methodology that was sub-par. 

Thus, while you may feel temporarily improved after an acupuncture session, before you toss your prescription medication for this approach, think twice. Until further studies can be performed, it’s best used as a supplemental treatment on top of your existing regimen. 

2. Arginine

You can find the amino acid arginine, or L-arginine, naturally in foods such as turkey, pork, chicken and soybeans. It’s widely lauded as an effective treatment for those suffering from heart diseases including clogged arteries and angina.

It’s one of the most common supplements for erectile dysfunction. Why? It works to relax your blood vessels, meaning that it should help encourage blood flow to your penis and improve circulation in that region.

The only issue? To feel any real effect, you’d have to consume a ton of it, and fast. Our bodies are designed to metabolize this substance at such a lightning-quick pace, as soon as you digested it, you’d need to intake it again. 

Unless you plan on making this supplement a major part of your daily diet, it’s best to skip the effort in favor of a more powerful, prescribed alternative. 

3. Ginkgo Biloba

Chances are, you or someone you know has taken a ginkgo biloba supplement at least once. It’s one of the most common medicinal herbs and the most well-known, to boot.

Recently, however, scientists have backtracked on this recommendation. After findings that the extract can increase the risk of seizures in epilepsy sufferers, it’s not quite the golden-child remedy that it once was. 

In addition to that major risk, ginkgo biloba can also lead to other health conditions if taken. These include excessive bleeding, convulsions, queasiness, and diarrhea. It may work in part on cognitive functions, but in terms of treating your ED, it simply isn’t worth it. 

4. DHEA

Put simply, your body produces DHEA within your adrenal glands. While scientists are still studying its exact functions, it’s known to be a precursor to both male and female sex hormones, including testosterone. 

For this reason, those suffering from low testosterone levels, or Low T, often take DHEA capsules as erection supplements with high hopes that it will revive their sex life. 

If you do suffer from Low T, you might see some degree of relief by taking DHEA. Yet, it’s important to note that this condition isn’t as common as it might seem. In fact, a recent study revealed that only 5.6% of the male population has low testosterone. 

Considering that the percentage of men affected by erectile dysfunction goes up 10% by decade (meaning 40% of men in their 40s have it, 50% in their 50s, etc.), it’s easy to see that Low T only plays a small role in this condition. 

Thus, you can take DHEA in hopes to improve your ED, but unless Low T is at the root of your problem, it may as well be a starch pill. Speak to your medical professional to get to the roof of your issue before beginning any treatment plan. 

5. Yohimbe

Sure, you can seek out this special bark from a certain species of African tree, but it could easily do more harm than good. It’s commonly prescribed in pill form to those looking to alleviate their ED.

It’s been known to boost libido and work as a natural anti-depressant. To that end, it may do some good, as depression and erectile dysfunction often go hand-in-hand. If ED rules your life, you might feel low self-esteem, diminished confidence, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. 

Yet, taking traditional depression medications can often wreak havoc on your libido and even lead to ED. As such, yohimbe can be a go-to natural cure. 

Before you take it, however, it’s important to understand its downsides. The supplement is known to also cause a quickened, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, and heightened anxiety. With so many other options on the market, setting yourself up for these kinds of risks just doesn’t make sense.

6. Pomegranate

You’ve seen it in your grocery store aisles and remembered the claims on the television. Pomegranate juice, according to some brands, is a superfood, believed to cure everything from prostate cancer to heart disease. 

However, it turns out that many of these claims might not have been as true as we’ve been led to believe.

In 2015, the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld an earlier claim by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that a top-tier brand of pomegranate juice was guilty of making unwarranted disease-prevention claims about its products. 

The medical research was misleading. There were no claims to back up the promises made. The evidence is inadequate, at best. 

While pomegranates are indeed high in antioxidants and other nutrients, there is no irrefutable proof that they can turn around symptoms of ED.

Moreover, risks include an allergic reaction, an adverse reaction to other prescribed medications and dangerously lowered blood pressure. There may also be additional complications for pregnant women who consume pomegranate, most notably allergic reactions. 

7. Horny Goat Weed

Well, the name sounds promising. 

Yet, horny goat weed, a supplement derived from a particular species of flowering plant that has long been a mainstay in ancient Chinese traditions, might not be fully effective in treating ED

It’s linked to aiding with sexual performance issues. In some cases, it’s also been known to assist with joint pain, arthritis, mental fatigue, physical exhaustion and other conditions. Yet, there simply hasn’t been enough research on this topic to make it a viable and valuable treatment plan for ED.

In fact, there have been no clinical studies actually trying horny goat weed on humans as an ED treatment, though there has been one that utilized rats. At the most, the herb might give you a much-needed boost of energy, but it’s more of a full-body effect rather than a targeted jolt toward your penis. 

It’s also been known to lower blood pressure to dangerous levels, meaning that if you are going to pursue this natural remedy, be sure to consult your doctor first.
