Understanding the ED Research
When it comes to improving erectile function or treating impotence, one of the common questions asked is whether it’s okay to take combined ED drugs. These usually refer to Tadalafil and Sildenafil (generic viagra).
These are the most common treatments for erectile dysfunction, but they’re not similar. Will it be safe to combine the two, or will it be better to use either one of them?
Fortunately, one study answered the query.
In 2015, Chinese researchers published the results of their experiment involving the two drugs. You can find the study in Andrologia.
The premise of the experiment was to determine whether a combined ED treatment of a low-dose Tadalafil and a high dose of Sildenafil on an as-needed basis would be both safe and effective.
For at least six months, the study recruited 180 participants with varying levels of impotence or erectile dysfunction. The researchers enrolled them under the Urology Department of the Affiliate Hospital, Nanjing Medical University.
They carefully chose each participant: men with a mean age of 18 years old and above who were in a monogamous relationship involving a female partner.
Despite their erectile dysfunction, they did not have other chronic or congenital conditions that might prevent them from taking the medications. These conditions included heart disease and penile malformation.
They also took two tests to measure the severity of erectile dysfunction as well as their level of satisfaction during penetration or sexual intercourse. For a complete picture of the results, their partners also answered some questions.
The researchers then divided the group into two. One served as the control and received only a dose of 5 mg of Tadalafil every day, while the second group took a dose of 5 mg Tadalafil daily and 50 mg of Sildenafil when necessary.
The experiment ran for 12 weeks. The first group received the medication each day throughout the study, while the second started with Sildenafil during the first four weeks.
What the Results Suggested
The analyses of the researchers showed there’s no significant difference in the overall improvement between the two groups. This was according to the statistical data they obtained using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5).
In certain aspects, however, combined ED showed to be more effective than taking Tadalafil alone, especially for people with severe impotence.
They reported frequent hard erections that allowed them to penetrate their partners better. They were also able to sustain such erections long after the penetration.
Those who took both medications also claimed better sexual experiences, and their partners said they achieved more satisfaction during their intercourse.
The Science Behind These Medications
Why did combined ED medications prove to be more effective than taking only Tadalafil? As mentioned, both these ED drugs are not the same.
What is half-life? It refers to the time it takes for half of a substance, like a drug, to undergo a biochemical process.
Between the two, Sildenafil is more bioavailable because it’s something your body can use quickly.
This explains why those who are thinking of using Viagra should take it only when it’s necessary. It also requires some pre-planning (about 60 minutes before sex).
This doesn’t mean that Tadalafil is less effective. Depending on the dosage, you can take this daily to develop a more stable blood concentration.
To develop an erection, your body should be able to deliver a good amount of blood supply to the penis.
The researchers also believed the combination of ED medication could help repair the endothelium, which is the cells that line the blood and lymphatic vessels. This lining, made of endothelial cells, forms the interface for the circulating blood, lymph in the lumen, and the vessel wall in the penis.
They also thought the fast effects of Sildenafil boosted the confidence and esteem of the men. Other studies already showed that negative thoughts, stress, and emotions could also impact erectile function.
What’s Our Conclusion for Combined ED Medication?
Our results suggest that combined medication can better improve erectile function, especially for patients with severe ED. Medicating with both may also be safe to take as long as you consume Sildenafil only when necessary and take Tadalafil at a low dosage.
In the end, it’s about your health. Use this research to have a thoughtful discussion with your doctor.
