How Common Are Erection Problems?

Here’s a question. How common are erection problems in men? In other words, how many men out struggle with getting or maintain an erection? The answer will surprise you. Contrary to popular opinion, a majority of men struggle with things like erectile dysfunction (ED).

For example, The Massachusetts Male Aging Study found that 52% of men are afflicted with ED. That’s more than half. Interestingly enough, that same study determined that age increases the likelihood of experiencing ED. In other words, older men were more likely to experience ED.

That study determined that by the age of 40 years-old, roughly 40% of men experience ED. By the time those same men turn 70 years-old, that number increases dramatically to 70%. However, not all studies are created equally, and studies out of other countries find differing statistics.

For example, a study out of the United Kingdom also found that roughly half of men experience ED. However, the half it affected were in their 30’s. Under 30, the study found that the number was cut down to about one-third. And, that number actually drops to 40% by the time they’re in their 40’s and 50’s.

Either way you look at it, a large portion of the male population around the world are afflicted with erection problems like ED. And no matter how you look at it, men who experience ED are deeply troubled by their impotence issues. Studies show that the self-esteem levels of once-impotent men increase as those men become better at achieving erections.

However, the fact of the matter remains that erection problems like ED and other sexual dysfunction like premature ejaculation are very common. And you’re not alone if you’re struggling with any type of sexual dysfunction since ED impacts the lives of so many.

How Many Men Suffer from Erection Problems?

When the whole adult male populace is taken into account, it’s estimated that around half of men suffer from erectile dysfunction symptoms of some kind. Whereas some of these men experience only sporadic erectile dysfunction, others of these men experience chronic dysfunction.

Generally speaking, as a man ages, he has a progressively more difficult time achieving and maintaining an erection. The higher the age bracket, the more instances of ED there will be. Let’s get into the specifics of different age brackets below.

Under 30

You may think that it’s statistically rare for young men to experience ED. However, it’s probably a lot more common than you think. It’s estimated that around 10% to 20% of men under 30 suffer from the condition on some level.

Around 5% of these men experience ED in a severe form.

30 to 40

As men move past the age of 30, they become even more prone to ED. Men between the ages of 30 and 40 have an erectile dysfunction rate of around 30%. Severe ED rates remain at around 5%

40 to 50

Between the ages of 40 and 50, it’s estimated that around 40% of men suffer from ED. These men suffer the condition at a range of severities, from mild to moderate to severe. Severe cases comprise around 7% of the population.

50 to 60

Men between the ages of 50 and 60 suffer from impotence at a rate of about 50%. Not coincidentally, this is also the age at which testosterone levels start to drop drastically.

Sever cases of impotence for this age range make up around 8% of the population.

60 to 70

It’s around the age of 60 when many men start encountering serious ED. Approximately 60% of men between 60 and 70 suffer from the condition in some form. Approximately 10% of men encounter it in a severe form.

70 and Older

Once men reach the age of 70, their chance of having erectile dysfunction skyrockets. At 70 and above, approximately 70% of men experience erectile dysfunction of some kind. Approximately 15% of these cases are severe.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

In order to combat erectile dysfunction, you must understand what causes erectile dysfunction. There are quite a few causes of the condition, a few of which we’re going to review below.

Low Testosterone

Men can experience low testosterone for a number of reasons, but it most commonly comes with aging. If you’re starting to experience ED now that you’re in your 40s or 50s, your testosterone levels could very well be the culprit. After all, testosterone has a fairly large effect on one’s ability to achieve an erection.

Poor Diet

Poor diet can cause erection problems both in the short-term and in the long-run. Some foods and beverages will create instant sexual dysfunction while others will create a slow-brewing sexual dysfunction.

For instance, consuming alcohol generally makes it very difficult to achieve an erection within the coming hours. On the other hand, eating nothing but pizza every day will often result in chronic impotence.

Lack of Exercise

Exercise is vital to erection quality in two ways:

  1. It stimulates blood flow to the penis
  2. It raises testosterone levels.

Those who don’t exercise regularly often experience both poor blood flow to the penis and low testosterone levels.

In other words, physically inactive individuals are prone to impotence. It’s a simple by-product of an extremely sedentary life.

Psychological Conditions

Some individuals experience ED, not because of their bodies, but because of their minds. The complexities are generally derived from the subconscious (or unconscious) minds rather than living in the conscious realm. This makes any diagnosis of psychologically-induced ED very difficult.

Shame, stress, fear, anxiety, depression, and a variety of other feelings can make it difficult for certain men to relax and enjoy sex. Their brains are quite simply not sending the necessary signals to the rest of the body. Since there is an interdependence between the body, the mind and the central nervous system, any short-circuit in the chain can have a dramatic impact on men’s ability to get or maintain an erection. /

Treating Erectile Dysfunction

There are a variety of treatment options for men who suffer from ED and other sexual dysfunction. Those treatment options can vary from the non-invasive to the invasive. Clearly, there are several very well-known options that include popular ED drugs like Viagra or Cialis.

However, men are not limited to the so-called “little blue pill” or “the weekender pill” as Viagra and Cialis are often respectively referred to. Most men now turn to their generic counterparts, Sildenafil or Tadalafil for a far more cost-effective solution for treating their ED.

Yet, while millions of men do turn to ED pills for treatment options, others opt for more invasive measures. Since ED can be a sporadic problem for some men, others experience prolonged forms of ED that are more chronic, making even popular drugs non-effective solutions.

Erectile Dysfunction Pills

If low testosterone and aging are the reason for your ED, your best bet is to treat it with specialized ED pills. These pills are generally taken within a few hours of the planned sex act, and will usually wear off within a few hours after the act is completed.

Healthy Diet

The only way to combat diet-induced ED is by fixing your diet. Consume plenty of proteins and plenty of carbs while doing your best to stay away from alcohol and other sedatives. Eat right on a consistent basis will generally provide results in the long-run.

Ample Exercise

Whether you suffer from ED or not, you should be exercising on a regular basis. If you’re trying to combat ED with exercise, specifically, you should make sure to institute both cardio and weight training. While cardio will stimulate blood flow to the penis, weight training will help to increase your testosterone levels.

Psychological Therapy

If you think your impotence is being caused by depression, shame, fear, guilt, or anxiety, it’s highly advised that you see a therapist. There is likely an unresolved issue that you’ll have to work out in order for you to achieve consistent erections once again.
