The Benefits of Erectile Dysfunction Treatments

Did you know that men of all ages can have erectile dysfunction? ED is no longer only the plight of the older generation, as 25% of men diagnosed are under the age of 40.

The good news is that there are plenty of erectile dysfunction treatments to help. Whether you’re curious about erectile dysfunction pills, injections, suppositories, or testosterone replacement, there are treatments you can access to help with this situation.

Before we dive into your treatment options, let’s first take a look at what causes ED and the treatments for it.

What Causes ED in the First Place?

Age is undoubtedly a determinant factor in an ED diagnosis since most men diagnosed are older than forty. But, there is more to ED than your age.

Chronic Health Conditions

Other health conditions, like high cholesterol or blood pressure, heart disease, or obesity can increase the likelihood that you’ll suffer from ED. In fact, nearly half of all men between the ages of 40 and 79 with high blood pressure suffer from ED.

Men with certain nerve conditions such as spinal cord injuries or multiple sclerosis are especially prone to ED. Sexual arousal starts in the central nervous system, so when neural pathways get destroyed or damaged, the brain can’t send stimulation messages to the penis.

Mental Health Conditions

Psychological issues cause up to 20% of all cases of ED.

Men with depression, general anxiety, schizophrenia, or other similar conditions may find that issues with erectile dysfunction pop up when they’re struggling. The brain plays an integral part in sexual arousal, so if your mental health is a challenge, you’ll need to address that in your treatment plan.

Stress is another factor that may be affecting your ability to get or maintain an erection. We have our caveman brain to thank for this.

When you’re stressed out, your body increases its adrenaline levels and your heart rate to make you faster and stronger. We evolved a fight or flight response to various stimuli.

Your body isn’t designed to stay in this heightened state for extended periods. If you’re chronically stressed, your arteries take a hit, which can affect how well your blood flows. Without an adequate amount of blood flow, you can’t expect to get or maintain an erection.

Testing for ED

There are several tests and procedures that your doctor or urologist may order.

You will likely answer several health questions. You can expect them to pry about your health and sexual history. Through the questionnaire, your doctor will be able to determine lifestyle factors, chronic conditions, or mental health causes your ED.

They may do a physical exam, checking your penis and testicles to ensure they look as they should. You may need to answer questions about hair loss or if you’re experiencing any breast growth. This is so they can determine if you have any underlying hormone problems that could be causing your ED.

Your doctor may order blood or urine tests to check for other health conditions. He’ll look at your thyroid levels as it plays an integral part in distributing sex hormones.

He may ask that you conduct an “overnight erection test”. This involves putting a device on your penis to determine if you’re achieving an erection in the middle of the night. If so, your doctor will then be able to deduce if mental or emotional issues causes your ED versus an underlying physical cause.

Your doctor might ask to perform ultrasounds or intracavernosal tests to get a better understanding of what could be causing your ED.

It’s essential to be honest with your doctor. They will never judge you or your past.

Looking for Erectile Dysfunction Treatments That Work?

Erectile dysfunction can affect every aspect of your life; from the obvious toll it takes on your sex life to the mental anguish you may feel as a result of it. The good news is that there are numerous treatments that you can turn to if ED plays a massive part in your life.

You might have to do some trial and error to find the right medication, dose, or treatment modality that works best for you. What works for you on one occasion may not produce the same results the next time you try. This can be incredibly frustrating, so it’s always wise to go into treatment with patience and an open mind.

Erectile dysfunction drugs are the most common form of ED treatment for good reason – they’re effective and simple to use. There are two main medications your doctor can prescribe, all providing their unique benefits.

How do you know which to try? You’ll need to discuss the benefits of using pharmaceuticals to treat your condition with your doctor to determine which will meet your needs. The best ED pill is the one that works for you, and it shouldn’t discourage you if it takes some time to find the right fit.

The most well-recognized erection pill is Sildenafil. What is Sildenafil, you ask? Perhaps you know it by its other name – Viagra. Sometimes referred to as “the little blue pill,” this medication works by increasing the amount of blood flow going to the penis. When an adequate amount of blood can reach the penis, it’s easier to get and maintain an erection.

Another commonly prescribed medication for ED is Tadalafil (Cialis). It works in the same ways as Viagra by increasing the blood flow to the penis.

A benefit of using Cialis over Viagra is that the effects tend to last much longer. Viagra only lasts around 4-6 hours, whereas men taking Cialis report reaping the benefits for up to 36 hours.

Many men love that they’re able to able to take a pill and still see results up to 36 hours later. If you miss the spontaneity of sex, you’ll want to seriously consider Cialis as your treatment option.

Do you have a romantic weekend away planned for you and your loved one? Take your Cialis on Friday night and you’ll still be able to have morning sex before you leave for home on Sunday.

If you’re looking for fast and effective results, we suggest trying the medicinal route first. The side effects are usually very minimal and will subside if you stop taking the medication.

Natural Supplements

If you’re not keen on using prescription medication for your ED, there are natural options you can try

Red ginseng has shown to be a promising natural treatment option. Ginsenosides, the main active component in this herb take action at the cellular level, helping to improve your erection.

Supplements like DHEA and L-arginine have shown promise in helping men achieve longlasting erections. As with pharmaceutical methods, however, you may need to do some trial and error to find a supplementation routine that works for you.

If you decide to go the natural route, make sure you’re doing research beforehand. Many supplements are not FDA-approved and could pose some health concerns. We recommend having a herbalist or naturopath you can turn to for advice as some herbs can interact with other medications you may be taking.

Injections and Suppositories

If you find that medication or supplementation isn’t helping with your ED, your doctor may prescribe alprostadil. You will take the drug in one of two ways – by injection or through MUSE suppositories.

If you go the injection route, the medication gets inserted into the side of your penis via a needle. It works within 15 minutes, usually sooner, and the erection should last about an hour or until orgasm. This is a riskier treatment option, however, as it can lead to scarring and prolonged, painful erections.

MUSE suppositories go into the urethral opening of the penis. Similar to injections, the suppository works within 10 minutes of insertion and should last around an hour.

Sex therapy is an integral part of treatment for men who suffer from ED due to psychological causes.

Your therapist will provide you with exercises to try at home. They may ask you to read novels about sexuality or perform touching exercises designed to take performance pressure away.
